Interior Design - 1000 sf

DEFT was engaged to design the first floor interiors of a newly renovated low-rise building in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, at the foot of Lion Rock. Tasked with creating a welcoming and inviting space with 6 classrooms in a 1000 square foot space, within 30 days, we welcomed the challenge.

The client owns and operates a clinic specializing in psychological, educational, and speech therapy for children up to 18 years old, and has expanded to open a larger and more comprehensive clinic space.

Our design concept revolved around creating a space that defies its relatively small square footage, flowing gently from the reception to the classrooms. Designed primarily as a child-friendly space, corners are curved and rounded, and natural and honest materials are used to appeal to the childrens' tactile curiosity.

Door handles and locks are raised above a child's reach to avoid any injuries while playing, and cabinet pulls are avoided, with recessed handles used in its place. Acoustics were another key concern as each classroom would need to be insulated from the others to avoid distractions. For this reason, the chosen flooring is designed to reduce sound transmission by up to 19 decibels. Sound reducing pegboard was also chosen a featured material on the corridor's false ceiling and the reception lobby's walls.
